Addictions - nWow! Counselling & Coaching
If you are wanting to end an addiction or compulsive behaviour, you may be experiencing something like being torn in two directions – at times wanting to ‘use’ and at other times wanting to stop. Part of the way we work with addictions is addressing this internal conflict.
An important step is checking what the addiction is there for – it might serve a purpose such as stress relief or distraction from other issues. Exploring these underlying purposes and intentions is often an important part of changing the addictive or compulsive behaviour. Facing and making changes in other areas in your life that you have previously been avoiding is another important part of the change process for many people.
From there, we can help you find new way to meet those underlying needs more effectively and feel aligned with the way you want your life to be.
Addiction issues we work with include:
- Food
- Cigarettes
- Gambling
- Alcohol
- Pornography
Note: In cases of drug and alcohol addictions (including prescription drugs), it is vital that you get medical support and do not attempt a detox yourself or go cold turkey. In these situations we require that you have regular medical support with the agreement of full disclosure with your doctor.
Some behaviours that people experience and think of as addictions may not officially be classified as an addiction (eg. sex related compulsions). This does not mean it cannot cause problems for people. If you feel unable to control a behaviour and it is causing distress to yourself, your loved ones or disrupting a healthy life, then we encourage you to seek support to make the changes you want.
